Why biostimulators
As we age, the skin makes less collagen. It becomes thinner and looser, and fine lines, crepiness and a loss of firmness start to show. Biostimulators work on that cause by triggering collagen production in the treated area.
They are used for skin laxity, fine lines, crepey skin and loss of firmness, and they also improve overall skin quality and glow. Because the change comes from your own collagen, the result looks natural and builds over time.
How it works
A biostimulator is placed beneath the skin, where it triggers your body to produce new collagen. Over the following weeks and months, the skin gradually becomes thicker and firmer.
Changes usually begin to show between four and eight weeks, with the best results at two to six months. Depending on the product, results last 12 to 24 months. Results vary from person to person.
Some biostimulators are given as a course of two or three sessions a few weeks apart. Annie will confirm the number of sessions for your chosen product and your skin at consultation.
Sculptra, Radiesse and Harmony CA
Sculptra builds collagen gradually to restore overall facial volume. It contains poly-L-lactic acid, and the change develops slowly over the months after treatment rather than on the day.
Radiesse gives instant structure and then stimulates collagen. It is made from calcium hydroxylapatite in a gel, which provides support straight away while your own collagen builds.
Harmony CA combines collagen building with instant structure, pairing hyaluronic acid with calcium hydroxylapatite. Annie will explain which of the three suits your face and your goals.
An important difference from filler
Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed. Sculptra and Radiesse cannot be dissolved in the same way, and the collagen-building part of Harmony CA cannot either. That makes careful assessment, accurate placement and conservative amounts especially important.
Annie is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, an independent prescriber and a member of the Aesthetic Complications Expert (ACE) Group. She carries out every treatment herself at The Orange Grove Clinic in Wymondham, and if a biostimulator is not the right choice for you, she will say so.

Safety
What you need to know before biostimulators
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active infection, cold sores or inflamed skin at the treatment site
- Known allergy to any component of the product, including lidocaine
- Autoimmune conditions or immunosuppressive treatment, assessed individually
- Bleeding disorders or a tendency to form raised scars, assessed individually
- Recent or planned dental work or vaccinations, discussed at consultation
Common and expected
- Redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection sites for a few days
- Bruising, which can take up to two weeks to fade
- Temporary firmness in the treated area as the product settles
Serious risks
As with any injectable placed beneath the skin, the most serious risk is vascular occlusion, where product blocks or compresses a blood vessel. It is rare. Because biostimulators cannot be dissolved in the same way as hyaluronic acid filler, there is also a small risk of nodules or lumps that are harder to correct. Annie follows recognised complication protocols, and you are given a number to call straight away if you notice unusual pain, whitening or mottling of the skin, or any change in your vision.
Aftercare
- Follow any massage instructions Annie gives you, as some products need regular massage for the first few days
- No makeup over the injection points for twelve hours
- No alcohol, strenuous exercise, saunas or steam rooms for 24 hours
- Avoid extreme heat or cold on the area until any swelling has settled
- No facials, peels or other treatments over the area for two weeks
- Contact the clinic straight away if you have any concerns

How are biostimulators different from filler?
Filler adds volume where it is placed. Biostimulators prompt your own skin to make new collagen, so the result builds gradually and looks natural. Some, like Radiesse and Harmony CA, also give some structure straight away.

Can biostimulators be dissolved?
Not in the same way as hyaluronic acid filler. This is why Annie takes particular care over who they suit, where they are placed and how much is used.
Do I need a consultation first?
Every new client starts with a free, in-person consultation with Annie before any treatment is booked. It is where your medical history is checked, your goals are talked through honestly and realistic results are agreed. If Annie does not think you need a treatment, she will tell you.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and any late-cancellation terms are shown when you book through the online booking system.
