This treatment uses a prescription-only medicine. UK advertising rules do not permit clinics to name or promote the medicine, publish its price, or show before and after photographs of it. This page explains the treatment and the consultation. Whether it is right for you, the medicine itself and the cost are discussed with Annie in person, at a free consultation.

How the treatment works

Excessive sweating, sometimes called hyperhidrosis, happens when the sweat glands produce more sweat than your body needs to keep cool. The treatment uses a prescription-only medicine, injected just beneath the skin of the underarm, that blocks the nerve signals to the sweat glands. With fewer signals reaching them, the glands produce less sweat.

The effect is temporary. It lasts between 4 and 14 months depending on the individual, after which the nerve signals gradually return and treatment can be repeated if it is still right for you.

A medical concern, assessed properly

Because the medicine is prescription-only, Annie has to assess you in person and decide whether it is appropriate before anything is prescribed. Annie is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and independent prescriber who has worked in Primary Care for many years, so she will take a proper history rather than simply book you in.

Sweating that has started suddenly, happens mainly at night or affects your whole body can have other causes, and these should be checked by your GP first. If that applies to you, Annie will tell you and explain why.

UK rules do not allow clinics to name or advertise prescription-only medicines to the public, so the price is given at your consultation rather than listed here.

What the appointment involves

The treatment is a series of small, shallow injections spread across the area of each underarm where you sweat most. A very fine needle is used and most people find it very manageable.

You can go straight back to work and your normal day afterwards. The reduction in sweating builds over the following days, so give it a couple of weeks before you judge the result.

  1. 01 Your free consultation: a full medical history, including any medicines you take and how the sweating affects you
  2. 02 A look at the treatment area, a conversation about whether this treatment is the right option, and consent covering the risks, the alternatives and the option of not going ahead
  3. 03 If treatment is appropriate, Annie writes your prescription. Nothing is injected at this visit

  5. 05 Aftercare advice before you leave

Safety

What you need to know before excessive sweating treatment

Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.

Not suitable if

  • Under 18s, as cosmetic treatment of this kind is not permitted by law in England
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
  • Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis
  • Known allergy to any component of the prescribed medicine
  • Infection or inflamed skin in the underarm
  • Sweating that may have another underlying cause, which should be checked by your GP first

Common and expected

  • Slight discomfort and pinpoint bruising at the injection points
  • Mild tenderness or itching in the underarm for a day or two
  • Some people notice a little more sweating elsewhere on the body

Serious risks

Serious side effects are uncommon. Very rarely, the medicine can affect muscles beyond the treatment area and cause weakness, or difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, which needs urgent medical attention. An allergic reaction is also possible but rare. Annie goes through the risks with you before you consent, and you can contact her at any time if you are worried.

Aftercare

  • Avoid deodorant or antiperspirant on the area for 24 hours
  • No strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms or hot baths for 24 hours
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the underarms for the rest of the day
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day
  • Contact Annie if you have any concerns

Questions

How long does the treatment last?

Between 4 and 14 months, depending on the individual. When the effect wears off, the treatment can be repeated if it is still suitable for you.

Why is the price not listed?

The treatment uses a prescription-only medicine, and UK rules mean its price cannot be advertised. Annie will give you a clear price at your free consultation, before you decide anything.

Does it hurt?

You will feel a series of small, quick injections with a very fine needle. Most people find it very manageable.

Will I stop sweating completely?

The aim is to reduce sweating in the underarms to a level that feels normal for you, not to stop it altogether. How much it reduces varies from person to person.

Do I need a consultation first?

Every new client starts with a free, in-person consultation with Annie before any treatment is booked. It is where your medical history is checked, your goals are talked through honestly and realistic results are agreed. If Annie does not think you need a treatment, she will tell you.

Is the clinic easy to reach from Norwich?

Yes. Annie treats clients at The Orange Grove Clinic in Wymondham, NR18 0BD, with plenty of parking and easy access from Norwich, the A11 and the A47. The clinic is relaxed, private and quiet. You can book online, or call 07359 836026 if you would like to talk anything through first.
