How it works

First, Annie carries out a consultation. She asks about the mole or mark that concerns you, how long you have had it, whether it has changed, and your personal and family history. She then examines it closely with a dermoscope, a handheld magnifying device with its own light that shows structures in the skin that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Next, Annie takes detailed photographs of each lesion. These are sent securely to Map My Mole, where the images are reviewed by dermatologists, doctors who specialise in skin.

Within 24 to 48 hours you receive a report. It tells you what the dermatologist thinks the lesion is and what, if anything, should happen next, whether that is no action, removal in clinic, or a referral to your GP.

Why checking your skin matters

Skin cancer is common in the UK, and like most conditions, it is easier to deal with when it is found early. Most moles are harmless, but it is sensible to get anything new, unusual or changing looked at rather than wondering about it.

A simple way to keep an eye on your own skin is the ABCDE guide. Look for moles that are Asymmetrical, have an uneven Border, more than one Colour, a Diameter larger than about 6mm, or that are Evolving, meaning changing in size, shape or colour. Any of these is a reason to get the mole checked.

The service is suitable for most skin lesions, moles and marks. Each assessment covers up to three lesions, so if you have several you are concerned about, Annie can prioritise them with you.

When to see your GP instead

If a mole or mark is changing quickly, bleeding, itching, crusting or painful, please see your GP promptly rather than waiting for a private appointment. A private check is a useful extra, not a replacement for your GP.

This service is a check of the specific lesions you bring to the appointment. It is not a full-body skin cancer screen, and a reassuring report on one mole does not cover others. Keep checking your skin and get anything new or changing looked at.

If the dermatologist's report recommends further investigation, you will be advised to see your GP and given a copy of the report to take with you.

After your report

If the dermatologist confirms a lesion is benign and suitable for treatment in clinic, Annie can talk you through removal options, which are priced separately. Some benign marks, such as skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses and some areas of sun damage, can be treated with cryotherapy or a plasma pen at the clinic.

If the report recommends a referral, Annie will explain what it says and what to do next, so you are not left with unanswered questions.
