Cryotherapy and Skin Tag Removal in Wymondham
Cryotherapy removes benign skin lesions by freezing them with liquid nitrogen. It can be used for warts and verrucas, skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses and areas of sun-damaged skin. Annie also offers plasma pen skin tag removal. Every lesion is assessed by Annie before treatment at her clinic in Wymondham, and anything that needs a medical opinion is referred.

What cryotherapy is
The word cryotherapy simply means treatment using low temperature. Liquid nitrogen is applied to the lesion, usually with a fine spray, freezing it so that the treated cells break down. The skin turns white for a moment, and over the following days the body clears the treated tissue as the area heals.
The freezing itself lasts a matter of seconds. It does not normally need a local anaesthetic and no special preparation is needed beforehand. Most people describe it as a cold, stinging sensation that passes quickly.
Lesions commonly treated include viral warts and verrucas, skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses (harmless, often raised brown marks that become more common with age), areas of sun-damaged skin and other benign lesions.
Assessment first, always
Every treatment starts with a consultation with Annie at the clinic in Wymondham. She will talk through what concerns you, look closely at the lesion and discuss the result you are hoping for.
Cryotherapy is only for lesions that are clearly benign. If anything looks unusual or Annie is not certain what a lesion is, she will not treat it. Instead, she will refer you to an appropriate medical practitioner, or suggest a mole check with a dermatologist report first.
This is the part of the treatment that matters most, and it is why the person assessing your skin is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of nursing experience.
Plasma pen skin tag removal
As well as cryotherapy, Annie offers plasma pen removal for skin tags. A plasma pen creates a tiny, precise electrical arc just above the skin's surface, which treats the skin tag without the device touching the surrounding skin.
A small crust forms over the treated spot and comes away on its own as the skin heals, usually within a week or two.
Plasma pen skin tag removal is £95 per session, or £135 per session for multiple or large surface areas. Annie will recommend whether cryotherapy or the plasma pen is better suited to your skin tags at your consultation.
Sessions, recovery and results
A cryotherapy session lasts 20 minutes. Depending on the size and thickness of the lesion, you may need up to four sessions, spaced every four weeks.
After a few days a scab will form, which takes one to two weeks to come away. Underneath, the treated area usually goes on to look normal. Depending on the lesion, some results can be seen immediately, and results are typically visible two to three days after treatment.
Children can be treated too, for example for warts and verrucas, at £50 per session. A parent or guardian needs to attend the appointment.

- 02 If it is not clearly benign, it is not treated, and Annie explains where to go next.
- 03 For cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is applied to the lesion for a few seconds and the skin briefly turns white.

Safety
What you need to know before cryotherapy and skin tag removal
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Any lesion that has not been assessed or where the diagnosis is uncertain
- Raynaud's, cold urticaria or other conditions affecting response to cold, for cryotherapy
- Poor circulation or impaired healing in the treatment area
- A pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, for plasma pen
- A history of keloid scarring
- Active infection or broken skin at the treatment site
Common and expected
- Discomfort during and after treatment, which painkillers can help with in the first 24 hours
- Swelling and redness that settle after two to three days, possibly with minor oozing
- Puffiness when treating near the eyes, which settles within days
- A blister and then a scab as the area heals
Serious risks
The main risk is a change in skin colour, usually a lighter or darker patch where the lesion was, which is more likely without a high-factor sunscreen and in deeper skin tones. Scarring and infection are uncommon and are reduced by not picking the scab and following your aftercare. The most important safeguard is the assessment itself: Annie only treats lesions that are clearly benign, and anything suspicious is referred.
Aftercare
- Keep the area dry until the scab forms
- Do not pick the scab or blister, to reduce the risk of scarring
- Cover the area with a dressing if it is likely to rub
- Think about the timing of strenuous activity in the first few days
- Painkillers can help with discomfort in the first 24 hours
- Protect the area with a high SPF to reduce the risk of pigmentation change
Questions
Does cryotherapy hurt?
It is relatively painless. Most people feel a cold sting during the few seconds of freezing and some discomfort afterwards, which painkillers can help with in the first 24 hours.
How many sessions will I need?
Some lesions clear after one session. Larger or thicker lesions may need up to four sessions, spaced every four weeks.
What will it look like afterwards?
The area may be red and swollen for two to three days. A scab then forms, which takes one to two weeks to come away, and the skin usually goes on to look normal.
Should I choose cryotherapy or the plasma pen for skin tags?
Both can be used for skin tags. Annie will recommend the best option for the size and position of your skin tags at your consultation.
Can children be treated?
Yes. Removal of a skin lesion for a child is £50 per session. A parent or guardian needs to attend.
What if Annie is not sure what my lesion is?
She will not treat it. Unsuitable or uncertain lesions are referred to an appropriate medical practitioner, or Annie may suggest a mole check with a dermatologist report first. Every new client starts with a free, in-person consultation with Annie before any treatment is booked. It is where your medical history is checked, your goals are talked through honestly and realistic results are agreed. If Annie does not think you need a treatment, she will tell you.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and any late-cancellation terms are shown when you book through the online booking system.
