How laser tattoo removal works
Tattoo ink sits in the deeper layer of the skin as particles too large for the body to remove on its own. A medical-grade laser delivers very short pulses of light that are absorbed by the ink, shattering it into much smaller particles.

Your first visit is a free consultation to discuss your tattoo and the pricing. Annie checks your medical history, looks at the ink, colours and skin type, and talks through how many sessions you might need.
A small test patch may be carried out on part of the tattoo to see how your skin responds before the full treatment begins.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 Annie checks your medical history, any new medication and recent sun exposure, and photographs the tattoo so progress can be tracked.
- 02 The area is cleaned, and you both wear protective eyewear while the laser is in use.
- 03 The laser is passed over the tattoo in short pulses. Most people describe it as a quick snapping feeling, like an elastic band against the skin. No anaesthetic is needed.
- 04 The area may turn white or frosted for a short time straight after, which is expected and settles.
- 05 A soothing dressing is applied and Annie talks you through your aftercare. Most people go back to normal activities the same day.

Safety
What you need to know before laser tattoo removal
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- A tan, sunburn or recent sun exposure on the tattooed area
- Medication that makes the skin sensitive to light, assessed individually
- Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the last six months
- A history of keloid or poor scarring
- Active infection, broken skin or an inflamed skin condition over the tattoo
- Epilepsy triggered by light, discussed at consultation
Common and expected
- Redness, swelling and warmth over the area for a day or two
- Pinpoint bleeding straight after treatment
- Blistering, which usually appears within a day and settles within a week or two
- Scabbing and itching as the skin heals
Serious risks
Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin over the treated area can happen and usually fades over the following months, though it is more likely on darker or tanned skin. Scarring is rare and is reduced by following your aftercare and not picking blisters or scabs. Some cosmetic and skin-toned inks can darken when treated, which Annie checks for at your consultation. Contact the clinic straight away if you notice spreading redness, heat, pus or increasing pain, as these can be signs of infection.
Aftercare
- Keep the area clean and dry, and follow the dressing advice Annie gives you
- Do not pick or burst blisters or scabs. Let them heal on their own
- Avoid swimming, hot baths, saunas and steam rooms until the skin has healed
- Keep the area out of the sun and use a high-factor sun protection once healed
- Wear loose clothing over the area to avoid rubbing
- A cool compress can ease any discomfort or itching
