How laser hair removal works
Laser light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy turns to heat at the root, damaging the follicle and the blood supply that feeds it, so the hair struggles to grow back.
Annie only uses medical-grade equipment and currently treats with an FDA-approved laser hair removal device. It is designed to treat all skin types, and your patch test lets Annie check how your skin and hair respond before your first full session.
Hair with little or no pigment, such as grey, white, very fair or red hair, does not respond well to any laser. If laser is unlikely to work for you, Annie will tell you at your consultation.
Why a course of eight sessions
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only work on hairs in the active growth phase, called the anagen phase. Not all hairs grow at the same pace, so at any one time only some of them can be treated.
That is why Annie recommends a course of eight treatments to start your plan. Spacing the sessions out means each one catches a new group of hairs as they enter the growth phase. Sessions are usually four to eight weeks apart, depending on the area.
You should notice finer, slower and patchier regrowth as the course goes on. Some people, especially where hormones play a part, need an occasional top-up session afterwards. Results vary from person to person.

You will be given full pre and post care information to follow, which helps your treatment work well and keeps your skin protected. It is where your medical history is checked, your goals are talked through honestly and realistic results are agreed. If Annie does not think you need a treatment, she will tell you.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 Shave the area the day before or on the morning of your appointment. Do not wax, pluck or use hair removal cream in the weeks beforehand, as the laser needs the root of the hair to be in place.
- 02 Arrive with clean skin, free of creams, deodorant, fake tan or makeup over the area.
- 03 Annie checks your medical history, any new medication and recent sun exposure before starting.
- 04 You both wear protective eyewear while the laser is in use.
- 05 The handpiece is passed over the area. Most people feel warmth and a light prickling or snapping sensation.
- 06 A soothing gel is applied afterwards and you can go straight back to your day.

Safety
What you need to know before laser hair removal
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- A tan, recent sun exposure or fake tan on the area to be treated
- Medication that makes the skin sensitive to light, including some antibiotics and acne treatments, assessed individually
- Active infection, broken skin, cold sores or an eczema flare in the area
- Epilepsy triggered by light, or a history of keloid scarring, discussed at consultation
- Tattoos or permanent makeup in the treatment area, which are avoided
Common and expected
- Redness and slight swelling around the follicles for a few hours
- Warmth or a mild sunburn-like feeling on the day
- Stubble that appears to regrow for one to two weeks as treated hairs shed
Serious risks
Less commonly, laser can cause blistering, a burn or changes in skin colour, either lighter or darker patches. These are more likely on tanned skin or if aftercare is not followed, and are usually temporary. The patch test and settings chosen for your skin are there to keep this risk low. If you notice blistering, crusting or any change that worries you, contact the clinic straight away.
Aftercare
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and swimming pools for 24 to 48 hours
- No strenuous exercise for 24 hours while the skin is warm
- Apply SPF 30 or higher to exposed treated areas, and avoid sunbathing and sunbeds throughout your course
- Do not wax, pluck or thread between sessions. Shaving is fine
- Avoid perfumed products, deodorant and exfoliants on the area for 24 hours
- Let shedding hairs fall out naturally over the next two weeks
