Facial thread veins
Facial thread veins often appear around the nose, cheeks and chin. For these, Annie uses a laser/IPL light treatment. An intense flash of light is directed at the veins, heating them and sealing them off.
Once sealed, the veins collapse and are gradually absorbed by the body, usually within around two to three weeks. Treatment is recommended every four weeks, with a course of six sessions for the best results.
The treatment is quick, and most people can go straight back to their day with only some temporary redness. It can improve the look of facial thread veins, and results vary from person to person.
Microsclerotherapy for leg spider veins
Microsclerotherapy treats spider veins on the legs and body. A very fine needle is used to place a small amount of liquid, known as a sclerosant, into the veins. The sclerosant damages the vein lining so the vein closes and fades over time.
Annie carries out the treatment under magnification so that even very small veins can be treated accurately. Straight afterwards, the area is compressed with taped swabs, and compression stockings are then worn day and night.
Microsclerotherapy is not suitable for facial veins or for veins above heart level. The sclerosant is a prescription-only medicine, so your suitability is checked carefully at a face-to-face consultation with Annie, who is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and independent prescriber.
Results and recovery
Facial thread veins fade over two to three weeks after each session, building over a course of six. Leg veins take longer: it can take at least two to three months to see the full result of microsclerotherapy, as the body slowly clears the treated veins.
Wearing your compression stockings as advised is an important part of the result. You are encouraged not to remove them until 22 days after the procedure, as taking them off early can allow blood to clot in the treated veins and leave brown staining.
Treated veins do not usually come back, but new thread veins can develop over time, so some people return for further treatment in future. Annie will talk through what is realistic for you.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 Annie goes through your medical history and medication, and looks at the veins to confirm the right treatment.
- 02 For facial veins, you wear protective eyewear and the light is applied to each vein in short flashes. Most people feel a brief warm snap.
- 03 For leg veins, the skin is cleaned and Annie injects the veins under magnification using a very fine needle.
- 04 After microsclerotherapy, taped swabs are applied for compression and you will be asked to wear compression stockings afterwards, which Annie explains at your consultation. Bring loose trousers to wear home.
- 05 Annie talks you through your aftercare and how to reach her if you have any concerns.

Safety
What you need to know before thread vein removal
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Legs: a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots or a clotting disorder
- Legs: reduced mobility, poor circulation in the legs or peripheral arterial disease
- Legs: a known allergy to sclerosant, or the contraceptive pill or HRT, assessed individually
- Face: a tan, recent sun exposure or medication that makes the skin sensitive to light
- Active infection, broken skin or an inflamed skin condition in the treatment area
Common and expected
- Face: redness, mild swelling and warmth for a few hours to a day or two
- Legs: bruising, itching and small raised areas at the injection points
- Legs: brown staining along the treated vein, which usually fades over several months
- Legs: fine new red veins near the treated area, which often settle on their own
Serious risks
Facial light treatment can occasionally cause blistering or patches of lighter or darker skin, which are usually temporary. With microsclerotherapy, rare risks include a small skin ulcer at an injection site, an allergic reaction, and very rarely a blood clot in a deeper vein. Seek urgent medical help if you develop pain, swelling or warmth in your calf, or sudden breathlessness or chest pain. Annie is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and independent prescriber, and you are given a number to call straight away if anything concerns you.
Aftercare
- Legs: wear your compression stockings day and night, and do not remove them until 22 days after the procedure
- Legs: avoid strenuous exercise for one week, but keep walking regularly
- Legs: avoid hot baths for one week
- Avoid sun exposure on the treated area for at least one month
- Face: avoid hot baths, saunas and strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and wear SPF 50 every day
