Mole screening

What to do

  • Read your report carefully and follow any recommendations it makes
  • Check your skin once a month, using the ABCDE guide
  • Take your own photos of moles you want to watch, so you can spot changes
  • Protect your skin with a broad spectrum SPF and avoid sunburn and sunbeds
  • See your GP promptly about any mole that changes, bleeds, itches or crusts

What is normal

  • None. The dermoscope is held against the skin and the examination is painless

When to call

Dermoscopy and photography carry no physical risk. The important limit is that the assessment only covers the lesions examined on the day, and a reassuring result does not mean other moles, or future changes, do not need checking. If a mole or mark is changing quickly, bleeding, itching, crusting or painful, please see your GP promptly rather than waiting for a private appointment. A private check is a useful extra, not a replacement for your GP.

The clinic number is 07359 836026. If you are worried, call or message rather than wait. If you cannot reach us and it is urgent, call NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency.
